Level 1 Beginner Spanish: Your Foundation

Beginner sessions are for those who have never had Spanish, studied it many years ago, or have engaged in self-study and are ready for more formal training. Included below are important expectations; outcomes that can be expected after attending beginner-level Spanish; and a summary of covered topics.

The Beginner Journey

Participants typically continue studying at the beginner level for four to six 6-week sessions in order to build confidence and gain comfort using present tense Spanish before taking their first intermediate class. This is a reflection that learning a new language takes time and effort. There are no “short cuts” that enable learners to become competent or fluent in a very short period of time.

What you can expect to achieve by taking beginner-level classes

    • Comprehension: Understand basic phrases and how to ask and answer questions, greet others and introduce yourself.
    • Alphabet & Pronunciation: Correctly say the Spanish alphabet and pronounce vowels, consonants, and Spanish words.
    • Vocabulary: Know days of week, months, weather, seasons, numbers, time, dates, and colors. Can discuss parts of body, animals, family members, food, and professions. Can use everyday words such as con, en, mucho, el dinero, a, algo, siempre, más, a veces, cada, todo, también, al lado de.
    • Grammar: Recognize and correctly use noun gender and number. Have basic knowledge of adjectives, articles (definite and indefinite), subject pronouns, and direct object pronouns.
    • Verbs: Able to conjugate & use present tense regular and irregular -ar -er -ir verbs, including tener, querer, ir, hacer, poder, saber, llegar, salir, conocer, and dar. Understand and use challenging word pairs such as ser/estar, saber/conocer, and por & para. Recognize and use reflexive pronouns and reflexive verbs.
    • Conversation: Have sufficient confidence to engage others in basic conversation. Can discuss weather, tell time, express age, ask for and give

Spanish word pronunciation and important grammatical concepts:

  • Pronunciation: Spanish alphabet, pronunciation & how to introduce yourself.
  • Essential Vocabulary: days, months, seasons, numbers, dates & time, and colors.
  • Nouns & gender: Nouns, articles, masculine/feminine, interrogatives, and asking for help.
  • Introduction to Spanish Verbs: Subject pronouns, verb infinitives, and present tense regular verb conjugation concepts.

Building your “word bank” for daily life:

    • Adjectives: Spanish demonstrative and possessive adjectives.
    • Verbs with Special Meaning: Hay and hace.
    • Irregular Present Tense Verbs: Irregular in root only and “yo” irregulars.
    • Two meanings of “to be”: When to use ser and when to use estar.
    • Conversation and readings: Registering in a hotel, describing a friend, reading and translating Spanish stories.

Key Spanish and English sentence structure differences:

    • More About Pronouns: Direct and indirect object pronouns.
    • Actions that “reflect: Understanding and using reflexive verbs.
    • “Liking Things”: Gustar and verbs like gustar.

Quick Facts

Class Structure: 6-week sessions with 1.5–2 hours of instruction per week. Homework supports practice outside of class.
